Q: What is the relationship between perceiving illusory contours and neuron responses?
D: The researchers have examined the activities of cells of visual cortex of monkeys during presentation of conventional stimuli producing contours by luminance gradients and stimuli producing illusory contours, and then compared the results.
A: Researchers have known that perceived illusory contours are the result of an image analysis performed in the brain. However, the nature of this process is not known. Therefore, the researchers examined the neurons of monkeys to figure out which brain area is responsible for illusory contours.
F: They found that illusory contours evoke responses in cells of area 18 in the visual cortex of alerted monkeys, and in contrast, area 17 have no significant neuron responses to illusory contours.
I: This research shows that area 17 actually does not respond to illusory contours, which opposes the opinion of previous research. On the other hand, the responses in area 18 cannot be interpreted simply as suboptimal excitation due to partial stimulation of the response field.
